Let’s be honest, when we’re looking to come up with new recipes, liquorice vodka isn’t amongst the first ingredients that springs to mind. But on the other hand we do love a challenge…

When our friends at Cox and Kings asked us if we would create a cocktail inspired by ingredients brought back from the travels of their customers we were happy to oblige. And what did we do? Go for the easier to work with tequila, vodka or gin? Hell no, we like to make things interesting, so we asked them to give us the liquorice vodka from Finland. Or, to give it its full name, the Koskenkorva Liquorice Salmiakki Vodka. Once we got to grips with its intense aniseed flavour we came up with not one but two drinks.

Got It Liqued

Taking a cue from the deep, dark colour of the Koskenkorva suggested intense fruits like blueberries, blackberries and raspberries, the richness of their flavours standing up well to the depth of the aniseed.

Ingredients

40 ml regular vodka
10 ml  Koskenkorva Liquorice Salmiakki Vodka
15 ml fresh lemon juice
10 ml sugar syrup
Handful mixed dark berries – blueberries, blackberries,  raspberries
Pink grapefruit to garnish

Method

Muddle the berries, add all the other ingredients and ice, then shake well. Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Run the pink grapefruit peel around the rim of the glass, squeeze gently over the drink and drop into glass.

Perfect Finnish

The digestif element of Koskenkorva inspired thoughts of coffee and lead in the direction of an Espresso Martini. You can just taste the aniseed lingering in the background but if you’re a full-on liquorice fan, add a little more to bump up the flavour.

Ingredients

50 ml regular vodka
10 ml Koskenkorva Liquorice Salmiakki Vodka
35 ml freshly brewed espresso
20 ml sugar syrup
Egg white (optional)

Method

If using the egg white dry shake ingredients first before adding the ice and then shaking vigorously again. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
