Beefeater London Market Gin

Talk about keeping us in suspense; we’ve known about Beefeater London Market Gin for months but haven’t been able to say anything about the new limited-edition recipe or, even more distressing, managed to taste it. That all changed last week when we met up with Dre Masso from Gin and Tales. In addition to showing invited guests how to make simple, summery cocktails using household objects, we all got to try out said recipes using the latest liquid creation from Beefeater Master Distiller Desmond Payne…

We love the smooth, soft elegance of the new gin due for release later this year. “The seasonal gins we’ve been creating are all inspired by a variety of things,” Desmond told us earlier this year. “For the Summer Edition I went for a snapshot of the season, looking to hibiscus, elderflower and blackcurrants. For our latest gin I wanted to replicate the essence and diversity of London markets. Key botanicals are pomegranate, kaffir lime leaves and cardamom.”

Kaffir Lime-ade

Once you get your hands on a bottle (we’re told it could be August or September) try it with pineapple juice and a squeeze of lime juice garnished with a simple sprig of sage, or a good quality tonic water garnished with a torn kaffir lime leaf to enhance the flavour. Alternatively, try the recipes we played around with, including two great punches:

Kaffir Lime-ade

50ml Beefeater Market Edition
25nl lime juice
15ml kaffir lime leaf syrup
Soda water
Ice cubes

Method:

Combine all ingredients, apart from the soda water, in a cocktail shaker, shake and strain into the glass and top with soda water. Garnish with lime wheel and torn kaffir leaf.

London Market Cooler

50ml Beefeater Market Edition
75ml Cloudy apple juice
Ice cubes

Method:

Build the ingredients in glass and top with garnish with mint sprig and lime wedge.

Pomegranate Fizz

40ml Beefeater Market Edition
Flesh from half a pomegranate
30ml Dubonnet
Champagne or sparkling wine

Method:

Muddle the gin, pomegranate and Dubonnet in a cocktail shaker, shake, double strain into Champagne flute and top with the Champagne or sparkling wine. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Portobello Punch

Portobello Punch

300ml Beefeater Market Edition Gin
500ml good quality cider
500ml cloudy apple juice
300ml lime juice
1 tin of fruit cocktail with syrup
2 green apples (sliced)
2 limes (sliced)

Method:

In a large bowl place sliced apple and limes. Cover with tin of fruit cocktail and pour over lime juice and gin. Leave ingredients to steep in a cool place for a while. When ready to serve add blocks of ice and top with cider and apple juice and stir. Serve in a punch bowl and garnish with lavender (optional).

Pommy Punch

300ml Beefeater Market Edition Gin
500ml Riesling or Gewurztraminer wine
500ml pomegranate juice
300ml lemon juice
1 tin of lychees with syrup
Large handful of seedless red grapes (halved)
2 lemons (sliced)

Method:

In a large bowl place sliced lemons and halved grapes. Cover with tin of lychees and pour over lemon juice and gin. Leave ingredients to steep in a cool place for a while. When ready to serve add blocks of ice and top with wine and pomegranate juice and stir. Serve in a punch bowl and garnish with lemon grass (optional).
