Things we’re looking forward to this week…

What the Dickens?

We won’t pretend, we’re soooo not feeling the Christmas thing at the moment. There might be just over a month to go before Santa comes sliding down the chimney but like the song goes, in our hearts it’s still spring. And no amount of blingy street lights or overly decorated shop windows has convinced us otherwise. So we’re hoping that stepping out on the Courvoisier Dickens Punch Tour will put things right…

The hour-long walking tour of Dickensian London takes in some of the major haunts of the great author including Bow Street Magistrates Court, the Charles Dickens Coffee Shop and St. Clement’s Dane Church. And for un-Christmassy types like us, various characters from A Christmas Carol popping up to add some festive cheer along the way. Even old Scrooge will be in on the act, serving up a Courvoisier Smoking Bishop punch at Dickens’ personal book binders, the Old Curiosity Shop. Tours start from Wednesday 23rd November and cost £12 (see below for details).

That’s after we’ll have had some seriously good fun with our friends at the London Cocktail Society. Mark, Emma and Kate always put on a good bash but their latest one at recently opened Shaker & Company promises to be their best yet. Members will be invited to concoct a batch of bitters and the best tasting recipe will be bottled up and available for sale from Masters of Malt. Definitely one we’ll be adding to our drinks list, whether we’re on the winning team or not…

We’re also looking forward to Russell Norman’s latest, Mishkin’s opening on Thursday. This time he’s gone all Noo Yoik on us, with a Jewish deli-inspired menu adding a touch of Lower Eastside magic to the West End. The menu is simple enough, think Brick Lane salt beef on soda bread, oxtail cholent and house-smoked beef brisket hash and eggs, all served with classic cocktails from 1930s-1940s. It’s got ‘hit’ written all over it – thank heavens they’re taking bookings…

Words to the wise

While his other four eateries (Polpo, Da Polpo, Polpetto and Sputino) all rightly focus on Campari and Aperol to wash down the Italian delicacies, Russell Norman’s latest is all about gin. Expect to choose from an extensive selection including many London distilled varieties.

The Courvoisier Dickens Punch Tour runs 6pm & 7.30pm (1 hour duration) on Wed-Sat, from 23 November-3 December. Meet at Bow Street Magistrates’ Court, Bow St, WC2. Tickets cost £12 (includes punch and guided tour) available from www.courvoisier.com
