Inspired by the Ancient Spice Route and distilled using exotic botanicals Opihr Orient Spiced Gin is a spirit with a decidedly individual character. Now it’s about to mix heritage with contemporary cocktails in an equally unique competition, the global final of The Opihr World Adventure Cocktail Competition in Marrakesh.
Opihr (and, in case you were wondering, it’s pronounced O-peer.) was a legendary region from which, it’s said, King Solomon regularly received cargos of gold, silver and, importantly, spices. While the exact location of Opihr remains a mystery it’s believed to have been in the Orient, along the Ancient Spice Route. Here merchants travelled thousands of miles trading exotic spices and botanicals from distance lands. Today Opihr Orient Spiced Gin’s hand picked botanicals are the epitome of the exotic intensity of the Orient, with spicy cubeb berries from Indonesia, black pepper from India and coriander from Morocco.
Following distillation in England’s oldest distillery, the result is a gin with a smooth yet citrusy aroma, a taste that balances warming spiciness with a little sweetness, and an elegant long finish of soft cracked black pepper and more spice.
Opihr makes for a particularly complex and delicious gin and tonic (we recommend it with a little fresh ginger). It’s also the perfect base for getting creative in contemporary cocktails. Which brings us to Marakesh and the 10 very talented bartenders who will be heading there next week.
The Opihr World Adventure Cocktail Competition has grown rapidly and this year the finalists, having been crowned national champions, will be arriving in Marakesh from all around the world.
As the name of the competition suggests the bartenders will be in for a few adventures and some stunning experiences but the business end of things is creating new ways to enjoy Opihr. In Marrakesh they’ll be called upon to serve up two Opihr originals. First they’ll be recreating the Opihr serve which earned them their place in the final. Then it’s time for them to get out of their comfort zones, taking inspiration from the amazing sights, sounds and spices of Marrakesh to push their creativity to a whole new level.
And what a place to get inspired. With a unique history stretching back nearly 1000 years, today Marrakesh is one of the vibrant and important cities in the Kingdom of Morocco. The old city, with its street vendors and their stalls in the medina, sits along modern neighbourhoods, while it’s also home to the country’s largest traditional souk selling everything from carpets to modern electronics. It’s noisy, it’s colourful and the 10 bartenders will be in the very heart of it.
It promises to be a very special few days and an adventure that’ll deliver some magical new Opihr cocktail creations.
Alongside Master Distiller Joanne Moore we’ll be there to experience the bartenders’ drinks, watch their presentations and ultimately select the 2017 winner. We’ll also be keeping you posted during the competion and rounding it up in the next issue of The Cocktail Lovers magazine.
