Invented in the 1890′s by an American engineer working in Cuba’s Daiquiri mountains, this classic has largely been superceded by its fruity, frozen cousins. However, we find the original remains one of the simplest yet most satisfying cocktails.
Perhaps the youngest of the classics coming on to the scene sometime in the late 1980′s. It has good credentials having been drunk by Material Girl Madonna and Carrie & Co in ‘Sex And The City’. More importantly the Cosmo was popularised by the great Dale DeGroff and was a one-time fave of Ms S.
The Champagne Cocktail goes back at least as far as 1862 when it appeared in ‘How to Mix Drinks’ or ‘The Bon-Vivant’s Companion’ by Jerry Thomas. Delicious variations include all sorts of spirits, liqueurs and fruit, but the classic is the perfect place to start.
Pitching up somewhere around 1930 at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, then really taking off a few years later in Manhattan, the Bloody Mary has, like a lot of cocktails, many variations. The difference is that people can get really picky about what they consider the best. We’ve had some glorious Bloody Marys and some truly atrocious ones. This one usually hits the spot.
