Bars, drinks, barware, books – if it’s cocktail-related we’ll have an opinion on it; that’s the ‘what’. For details of ‘how’ we review, see below… Bars Bar logic We’ve tried to do our bar reviews in a logical fashion. Start with the area guide, either using our search facility or The Cocktail Lovers bar map (particularly handy if you’re planning to make a night of it.) Next check the heart ratings for an at-a-glance guide to value, atmosphere, price, service and overall impression. Then take a few moments to read through our comments – you could save yourself a great deal of time and money – cocktails are great but they certainly ain’t cheap! First Things First Here’s where we give a snapshot of the venue, describing the mood, clientele and setting The Signature Ms S samples the signature or most popular drink in the bar. The Martini Mr G judges a bar on how well the staff can mix a martini, asking for their choice of gin. TCL Choice This is where the fun really starts: Ms S and Mr G zone in on the menu, choosing a drink that tickles their fancy, either because of unusual ingredients or simply because it sounds so darned good. And To Eat? How many times have you been to a bar and felt compelled to leave because the food wasn’t up to scratch? Peanuts and olives are all well and good but they don’t quite cut it with die-hard Cocktail Lovers. We tell you the places worth pulling up your bar stool and settling in for the night. Look Out For These are the little details that make a bar stand out, it could be something as simple as a well thought out cocktail menu or something as lavish as a cabinet designed to chill the perfect martini, either way, it doesn’t escape our beady eyes. What’s The Damage? Giving you the head’s up so you know whether you need to dip into your piggy bank or call the bank manager – preparation is key (particularly if you’re out to impress). Ms S & Mr G says: The last word from a male/female perspective (we hope you find it valuable). The Details Addresses, websites, ya-di-ya-di-ya… Products Fab new products There are pros and cons to having as much choice as we do right now; once upon a time we made do with Gordon’s gin and a nice drop of Smirnoff if we were partial to vodka, nowadays there’s a new spirit launch every week. We make it our business to sample the good, bad and occasionally downright ugly drinks on the market. Watch out for our regular reviews. We’re also always on the lookout for new bits of cocktail kit, books and apps. If there’s a bar, product or anything else you think we should know about then please drop us a line. Likewise, if you’d like us to review your bar or product, then please get in touch.
